Life In Your 20’s

Life in your 20’s is a weird time. I mean, you spent your whole life with a guide: at age 5 you should start school, at age 7 you take your first exams, at age 14 you should be in year 9 learning about the inner workings of your body and how a sperm attaches itself to an egg. You stumble through life, sure, but you stumble with a clear guide as to where you should be, at what age, doing what.

But when you are in your 20’s, life doesnt seem to work in that way. There’s no longer a school system to guide you where you need to be. There’s so age limiting laws with what you can and can’t spend your money on. There’t no right. And no wrong.

I’ve got friends who are married, have babies and are living their happy family lives. I have friends who still live in their childhood bedrooms, not knowing what they want to do with their lives. I have friends who chose to go to university and friends who chose to get a job.

What makes it all the more difficult navigating your 20’s is the elephant in the room- social media. Back in our parents day, they didn’t even know what Megan from school was up to… But I can clearly see that she’s just got engaged and, oh look, a promotion at work and, OMG that holiday in Spain looks dreamy.

With social media being shoved down our throats, we can only ever compare ourselves to others. But living in your 20’s is the WORST time to compare yourself. There’s no rule book, no guide, no sign of where we SHOULD be in our lives…

I guess what I am saying is that we are all just stumbling through. And that life isn’t a race. Your 20’s are your time to figure out exactly what you want from life, and where you want to go with it. So stop comparing yourself to others and let yourself live through your (apparently) best years.
