Becoming A Morning Person

Becoming a morning person when you are really not is so tough. I’m a bit of a funny one, I am DEFINATELY not a night owl… but I am not a morning person either. I kind of come alive at around 11 when I’ve had a couple of cups of tea or coffee and also come alive just after lunch… because who doesn’t??

But anyway, I have been trying to make much more of an effort to become a morning person and to stop wasting the day laying in bed, contemplating whether to get up or not. So I thought I would share the little changes I have been making in an attempt to become more of a morning person.

Go for a run

I know, I know, I have turned into one of those people. But yes, I think the best way to start your day is to go for a morning run. It doesn’t have to be long. Depending on how I am feeling, I go between 5 and 8k when I have a morning run. Now I know that this is really difficult thing to do when we are all back at work, school, college or whatever. But you do have the weekends… SHOCH HORRER AS EVERYONE CURSES ME AND IS APPALLED AT THIS SUGGESTION. Seriously though. I find that it realy wakes me up and stops me from wasting my Saturday or sunday. You don’t have to get up super early and miss your lie in. I usually wake up naturally at about 10 on Sunday and just go out then, I sometimes set an alarm for around 9 to go. But on a Saturday I always participate in ParkRun. If you are a fellow keeno runner you will have heard of park run. However if you haven’t, give it a quick google to see if there is one near you. It is basically a free run that you can do every Saturday that you get timed and scored for…. Its hard to explain in words. You basically just run for 5k on a Saturday with up to 800 others (most of them are much smaller but the one near me in quite big now!)

By doing parkrun I really give myself a reason to get out of bed on Saturday. And I hate myself when I set the alarm. I hate myself when it goes off at8. I hate myself as I get changed, get into the car and drive myself down to the park. I hate myself most when I am running it. But I feel so good afterwards. That sense of acheievment as I see my time slowly decrease each week and I cannot tell you how sadly proud I am when I get a pb (personal best). So I would urge you to get your way down to a local park run to get yourself up at the weekends and ensure that you give yourself the healthiest start to the day.

BREAKFAST Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m sure that you have heard this millions of times but that’s because it is just so true! I don’t have breakfast before I run though, I tend to just get up and go, then when I come home I have worked up an appetite for a nice bowl of Cheerios (honey of course).

I cannot stress how important it is to have breakfast in the mornings. And for the girls who are ‘trying to loose weight’, actually not eating breaky has been proven to increase your weight, as your body stores more fat from the other meals you have, due to the lack you give it in the mornings. SO BE SURE TO EAT BREAKFAST even if it is an apple or a yogurt or a kiwi, starting up your metabolic system for the day is so important.

It has also been proven that eating breakfast in the morning stimulates reward receptors, making you happier and in turn, making you a morning person.

Alarms

We all hate alarms. That moment of doom when it goes off in the morning is just the worst feeling ever. So when it comes to setting an alarm, I try to wake myself up as gently as possible. I know that a lot of people like to use the app that can judge when it is best to wake you up according to your sleep cycle, but I need to get up at a set time each morning so that’s not the best thing for me. So what I do is set myself a very quiet alarm with a nice tinkle tinkle sound that allows me to wake up slowly and gently to the alarm. I then usually snooze it twice and then the third alarm I know I need to get up! I always found that if I set a horrible loud alarm that startles me awake, I am much more groggy and tired and I just feel horrible all morning. Obviously different things work for different people, some like to use the radio to wake up, others need a really loud alarm.

To do list

I really like writing myself a to-do list. Its not the first thing I do when I wake up, but it is the first thing I do when I sit down to do some work. I do this to be sure that I am keeping on top of things and I like the feeling of organisation to start my day.

So these are a few things that I have been doing to try and become a morning person, I feel that that are mostly working and I am mostly becoming better in the mornings. Let me know what you like to do and whether you are a morning or evening person.
