12 Things I Have Learnt In The 12 Months Of 2016

2016 has been a hell of a year for a lot of it. I think its been the most stressful, haunting yet rewarding years of my life and I am so grateful for what it threw at me. I feel like I have learnt a lot of life lessons throughout the year, I barely recognise myself from a year ago and cannot believe how much 2016 has changed me as a person. So here are 12 lessons that I have learnt in the last 12 months.

I am much stronger than I thought

If you had asked me a year ago if I was strong I would have said no. To be honest I didn’t think that much of myself and wouldn’t have believed some of the things that I would have been able to get through in 2016. In all honesty, I have realised that I am a strong girl who can tackle anything that is thrown her way and I am so proud of myself for that.

Hard work pays off

This is probably a very ‘duh’ thing for most people but it only took me until this year to realise how much hard work really does pay off. 2016 was the year of my final A level exams and I wont lie; I worked my butt off for them. I worked harder than I ever had in my life and I was so determined to do well in them. Thankfully my hard work payed off and I have gotten myself to where I am now; enjoying myself at university!

Its okay to rely on people sometimes

I know a lot of people who don’t like relying on others and only like to do things themselves. But actually, and its taken me a while to realise this… but sometimes its okay to rely on people. Its okay to offload and put your faith in someone else. It can help you feel better and bring you closer to that person. So stop tackling everything alone and learn that its okay to rely on others.

Happiness is just around the corner

Sometimes you feel like the whole world is on your shoulders and you just don’t know what you can do to improve situations. But you know what? You just gotta have faith that happiness is around the corner. Its not always clear but it will come around, just be patient.

Tell the people that you love that you love them

This is something that I have always felt strongly about but I especially learnt this in 2016. Appreciate those around you and let them know how you feel. Its so important.

Not everyone is who you thought they were

Sometimes someone you met two weeks ago can be a better friend than someone you’ve known for 12 years. People change and thats okay. You cant predict whats going to happen and you certainly cannot control people. So not everyone is going to turn out the way you thought they would. It took me a long time, but 2016 certainly taught me this.

Its okay to be happy

A concept that I think is very hard to grasp in this day and age. But actually, sometimes its alright just to be happy. No anxiety, no other emotions but pure happiness. Its so important to let yourself be happy and not feel guilty about it.

Adulting is HARD

My goodness I have had to grow up a lot this year. I have been used to relying on my mum for everything. But moving away from home and having to fend for myself has really taught me a lot of life lessons; and the biggest one is that adulting sucks. Its hard and not fun at all and… it just sucks. So thanks for that wake up call 2016.

You never don’t need your mamma

This ties in with the adulting thing but you never ever stop needing your mum. Never.

True friends will be there for you no matter what

Its funny how much this year has shown me what true friends I have. And they will be there for me no matter what happens. We can be in different countries but I know that they are still there for me. 2016 has really shown me what true friends do.

Strangers can become your closest friends in a matter of days

Since starting uni I have learnt a lot. One thing is that people who you didn’t even know existed can be the more important things in just a short space of time. Its funny how the world works like that.

Family are the most important thing

I love my family to bits and if theres one thing that 2016 has taught me, its just how important they are to me.
